When I tell you this was the best BET Awards in awhile, that would be an understatement. This show proved again why it is the best award show every single year. Yes, the Grammys are a major event but we can all admit they are boring as hell. BET pulls out all the stops with their performances and make sure they pay proper respect to our legends with dope tributes.

This year they set the bar higher! When you let Beyonce open up your award ceremony you already know everything else will be lit. Queen Bey graced us all with surprise performance of her politically charged record “Freedom” featuring rapper Kendrick Lamar. The African-inspired performance had everyone on their feet from the moment the dancers hit the aisles. If you went to the Formation Tour this summer, you’ve already seen that same performance but for it to be televised is so epic. Beyonce may not say much but her music always let’s us know where she stands on the issues.

Another standout performance was Alicia Keys slaying her new single “In Common.” I pretty much gave up on her music after the 2012 release of Girl On Fire but that break gave her some new mojo. Keys showed us how much she is musician at her core! She had everyone rocking and amazed all at the same time. During the show, I even added that song to my playlist; Alicia Keys mission accomplished.

I can’t forget about the ratchet rappers that had the whole Microsoft Theatre so turnt up. Of course, I got my life to Desiigner and Future but the moment Remy Ma and Fat Joe hit the stage they showed what Hip Hop is. It’s so good seeing them together again because I just get flooded with high school memories; when I knew every word to “Conceited” by Remy Ma.

Some other highlight performances were Usher and Bryson Tiller. But these two represent to totally different sides of R&B music, Usher’s performance was better of course but Bryson is holding his own musically. Tiller could definitely get some lessons on stage presence from the veteran though. I did have a good chat last night with a industry insider who stated “Usher needs to grow with his fans and stop trying to be so young; your wife is almost 50.” That was probably the realest thing I’ve heard in awhile. #SipsTea ..I can’t front “No Limit” featuring Young Thug will be a banger this summer. They played it multiple times at Mark Pits annual Post-BET Awards party at Bootsy Bellows.
